Meeting Notice for the Kokee and
Waimea Canyon State Parks Master Plan
and Draft EIS
A public information meeting will be held on June 27, 2006 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the cafeteria of Eleele School in Eleele, Kauai. One of eight meetings held with the community to develop a twenty year Master Plan, from 2005 – 2025, discussion will focus on the anticipated impacts of the proposed park improvements for Kokee and Waimea Canyon State Parks. The primary objective of the plan is to preserve the natural wildland environment while providing improved facilities and services to park visitors.
Several primary destination sites are proposed for development with construction of a new lodge, park headquarters, service desk, and museum at Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow as well as a new park entrance and lower elevation lookouts. Improvements to the four major lookouts at Puu o Kila, Kalalau, Puu Hinahina, and Waimea Canyon include the parking areas and comfort stations, as well as renovations to viewing platforms and pathways for ADA accessibility.
The draft EIS is available at the Hawaii State Library, the Lihue, Waimea, Hanapepe, and Princeville libraries, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources website at: http://www.state.hi. us/dlnr. Any person requiring a special accommodation is asked to contact Lauren Tanaka at (808) 587-0293 by June 20, 2006.
