SECTION 106 OF THE NATIONAL HISTORIC
PRESERVATION ACT OF 1966 AS AMENDED (2006)

Notice is hereby given that the Federal Highway Administration
(FHWA), Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), and County of
Kaua’i, Department of Public Works propose a project to construct
roadway improvements, including sidewalks, bike lanes, bus
stops, and a shared use path in the Lihu’e Town Core. Project
components include improvements on Rice Street, Hoala Street,
Kalena Street, Hooloako Street, Puaole Street (between Malae
Street and Hoolako Street), Malae Street (between Hardy Street and
Puaole Street), and a shared use path from the Civic Center to War
Memorial Convention Hall. The purpose of the project is to improve
connectivity and safety for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and
transit users within the project area. This proposed project is a
federally funded County project. As such, it will be considered a
federal action and undertaking, as defined by Section 106 of the
National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended
(2006). Constructions anticipated to begin in 2018.
Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA, Native Hawaiian organizations
and Native Hawaiian descendants with ancestral, lineal or cultural
ties to, cultural knowledge or concerns for, and cultural or religious
attachment to the proposed project area are requested to contact
the County of Kaua’i Planning Department via email at plankauai@
kauai.gov, or by U.S. Postal Service to County of Kaua’i Planning
Department, 4444 Rice Street A473, Lihu’e, Hawaii 96766.
