NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR-DOFAW), is authorized to manage and regulate public lands set apart as Forest Reserves as detailed in Chapter 183, Hawaii Revised Statues (HRS). Pursuant to HRS Sections 183-12 and 183-13, DLNR hereby provides notice of public hearing for four proposed additions of government lands to the Forest Reserve System:
1. Addition of TMK parcels (3) 7-1-001:001, 004, & 006; (3) 7-1-002:001 & 013; (3) 7-1-003:016; and (3) 7-1-004:018 (approximately 37,901 acres) to the newly designated Puu Waawaa Forest Reserve at Puu Waawaa and Puu Anahulu, North Kona, Hawaii, for natural, cultural, and recreational resource management purposes including but not limited to restoration of native plant and animal ecosystems, preservation of cultural resources, reforestation, hunting, public recreation, research, pasture, education, eco-tourism activities, and other appropriate Forestry purposes.
2. Addition of TMK parcel (3) 9-5-006: portion of 001 (approximately 1,371 acres, pending final sub- division) to Kau Forest Reserve at Waiohinu, Kau District, Hawaii, to provide for public recreation opportunities, protection of Hawaiian cultural and unique natural resources, and other appropriate Forestry purposes.
3. Addition of TMK parcels (3) 1-2-010: 002 & 003 (approximately 25,856 acres) to the newly designated Wao Kele O Puna Forest Reserve, situated along the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano, Puna District, Hawaii, for the protection and management of its natural and cultural resources and other appropriate Forestry purposes.
4. Addition of TMK parcel (3) 2-6-018: portion of 001 (approximately 1,500 acres, pending final subdivision) to the Hilo Forest Reserve at Puu Oo, Piihonua, South Hilo, Hawaii, to provide public recreation and hunting opportunities, wildlife preservation, weed control, and other Forestry purposes.
DLNR-DOFAW will hold a public hearing to discuss these proposed Forest Reserve additions at 6:00 P.M. on July 12, 2007, at the DOFAW Office Conference Room, 19 East Kawali Street, Hilo, Hawaii 96720.
All interested persons are urged to attend the public hearing to present relevant information and individual opinion for the DLNR to consider. Persons unable to attend or wishing to present additional comments, may mail written testimony postmarked no later than July 27, 2007 to the Forestry Program Manager, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, 1151 Punchbowl Street Room 325, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813.
