SPECIAL GOAT HUNTING SEASON TO OPEN IN KALALAU VALLEY, KAUAI
Legal Notice: DOFAW 07-11

Pursuant to Title 13, Chapter 123 (13-123-4 and 5), the Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the opening of a special rifle feral goat hunting in the Kalalau valley and Pohakuao portions of Hunting Unit G (between Manono ridge and Kalepa ridges). The purpose of the hunt is to control goats within this section of the Na Pali Coast State Park.

The game resource will be made available to a limited number of hunters selected by lottery. The hunting season will be held for one weekend only, on August 25-26, 2007. Up to thirty hunters will be eligible to hunt during the weekend hunt. Between twenty-seven (27) and thirty (30) hunters will be drawn for each weekend, depending upon the last hunter group size drawn. (Not to exceed 30 hunters per weekend).

The bag limit will be four (4) goats per hunter; however two goats must be nannies (females). Hunters will be permitted to use either muzzleloading or conventional rifles but may carry only one firearm on his/her person while hunting.

Applications are now available at any district Division of Forestry and Wildlife office. Hunters may apply singly or up to a maximum group size of four (4). There will be no exceptions. Each hunter applicant will be required to pay a non-refundable $5.00 application fee. A list of qualified hunter applicants will be posted on the day of the lottery (July 11, 2007) for public view in the Lihue Division of Forestry and Wildlife office, Room 306, Lihue State Office Building.

The deadline for submitting application forms and application fees to the Lihue Division of Forestry and Wildlife is 4:00 p.m, Friday, July 6, 2007.

Hunters interested in attending the public lottery are welcome. The lottery will be held on July 11, 2007 in the second floor conference room 209 in the Lihue State Office Building, 3060 Eiwa Street, Lihue, Kauai at 3:00 p.m.

Successful hunt draws will be notified by telephone or by mail after the official lottery results are final. Further instructions will be provided on purchasing hunting and camping permits. Hunting permits will be $10.00 per resident hunter ($25.00 for non-resident hunters). Camping permits will be through State Parks at $10.00 per person per night at either Hanakoa or Kalalau campsites.

The deadline to receive full payment of hunting and camping permits will be August 3, 2007 for this hunt. Unfilled permits past the deadline will be offered to the next eligible hunter or hunter group on the lottery list until all vacant slots are filled.

Hunters will be allowed to enter the area via Na Pali Coast trail or by boat to Kalalau beach on Friday (August 24th) prior to the hunt. This will allow time to set up camp and scout the hunting area, but no hunting will be permitted on Friday. Hunters must provide their own round-trip transportation (no helicopter transportation will be permitted).

The provision for this special hunting season was reviewed and approved by the Kauai Aquatic Life and Wildlife Advisory Committee on February 24, 2007.
