Office of Planning
Recruitment –
Marine and Coastal Zone Advocacy Council

In accordance with Section 205A-3.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, the Marine and Coastal Zone Advocacy Council (MACZAC) was established to advise the Hawaii Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Program and advocate public interest in CZM matters. The Office of Planning is soliciting applications for representatives on all islands for membership on MACZAC to fill existing and upcoming vacancies over the next six months.

MACZAC comprises twelve non-government members based on statewide geographic distribution – Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kauai – and a balanced representation of interests including: business, environment, practitioners of native Hawaiian culture, terrestrial and marine commerce, recreation, research, and tourism. The Director of the Office of Planning appoints MACZAC members on a staggered term basis of not more than three years per term. Appointees serve without pay and are provided airfare for travel between the islands. MACZAC meets (4) four times per year during the workweek, and members may serve on working groups that hold meetings on one or several islands by video conferencing or in person.

MACZAC supports the Office of Planning by providing advice regarding marine and coastal zone management planning, coordination, and facilitation of CZM functions. One of its specific charges is to work toward the implementation of an integrated comprehensive management system for marine and coastal zone resources consistent with the CZM law objectives and policies. Others include:

€ Evaluating the CZM Program, including the activities of the network
agencies, and make recommendations for improvements;
€ Advocating the Program to the public and the executive and legislative branches of government;
€ Advocating, providing for, and acting upon citizen input;
€ Facilitating the implementation of the Ocean Resources Management Plan; and
€ Forecasting and addressing critical emerging issues and potential problems in coastal and marine resources management.

Interested persons should submit their applications to be received by the Office of Planning. For existing vacancies on Molokai and Hawaii please have applications in by no later than 4:30 p.m., Hawaii Standard Time, September 24, 2006. To be considered for upcoming vacancies on all islands please have applications in by no later than 4:30 p.m., Hawaii Standard Time, October 1, 2006.
