NOTICE OF ANIMAL CONTROL ACTIVITIES AND TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF HONOULIULI, LUALUALEI, MOKULEIA, NANAKULI, AND WAIANAE KAI STATE FOREST RESERVES, AND KALUANUI AND MOUNT KAALA STATE NATURAL AREA RESERVES

The Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Department of Land and Natural Resources, State of Hawai’i, will conduct animal control activities, specifically aerial shooting from helicopters for feral goats (only) within the Honouliuli Forest Reserve, Lualualei Forest Reserve, Mokuleia Forest Reserve, Nanakuli Forest Reserve, Waianae Kai Forest Reserve, and Mount Kaala Natural Area Reserve. Aerial shooting from helicopters for feral pigs (only) within the Kaluanui Natural Area Reserve.
Control schedules are as follows: August 2, 2017 to August 4, 2017, August 23, 2017 to August 25, 2017 and August 29, 2017 to August 31, 2017.
On the above listed dates, from 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., public access to the above listed State Forest Reserves and Natural Area Reserves will be restricted. Access allowed BY PERMIT ONLY, pursuant to [Forest Reserves: HAR§ 13-104-23(a)(3)].
Aerial shooting is required to control animal populations in the subject area for the conservation of threatened and endangered species, native ecosystems, and watersheds. The temporary closure is needed to minimize the dangers of incompatible uses in the same area and safely allow completion of the animal control activities.
Copies of maps illustrating the areas subject to aerial shooting on these dates are available for inspection at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife District Office, 2135 Makiki Heights Drive, Honolulu HI, 96822.
