Full Time, Permanent, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Outreach Programs. Annually renewable on satisfaction of performance and availability of funds.
Duties and Responsibilities: Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot servers and networking equipment. Monitor and verify data backups, ensuring data security and recoverability. Maintain current knowledge of operating systems including Linux, Windows, and OSX. with an emphasis on Ubuntu Server. Train, supervise, and evaluate student technicians. Assist as necessary with technical support queue, to include maintenance of classroom AV; system repairs, and troubleshooting. Maintain functional access to all COE online systems as senior systems administrator. As Senior Systems Administrator, collaborate with Technical Support Manager to improve processes and provide quality service to end users. Monitor, diagnose, and resolve security issues on all networking and server systems. Independently develop software models for projects as senior developer, including systems and network monitoring. Identify workarounds, short-term and permanent solutions to infrastructure problems that arise unpredictably during the normal course of business, such as emergency fixes to production servers that experience downtime. Based on expertise in networking and systems administration, select and advocate for technically-sound decisions at the planning phase of project proposals. Respond to hardware or software failures with strategies appropriate to minor, major, or critical/emergency status. Code software solutions to assist in maintaining the college’s services and technology stack. Maintain expertise required for operational maintenance and configuration of server infrastructure, including Cisco networking and an Openstack cloud. Supervise and assign tasks, procedures, and policies to student assistants, junior developers, and collaborating APTs. Collect, interpret, and apply project requirements based on end-user needs and collective development team input. Results of analysis, recommendations, or implementation efforts assists in providing the basis for decisions made by higher level personnel. Work on simple technical or specialty area problems is expected to reflect sound judgment and analysis. Recommendations are considered by immediate supervisor in the completion of assigned tasks. Organizes, plans, and coordinates specific tasks that may require some original thought and foresight to develop an appropriate product or evaluation. Applies or adapts standard policies, principles, regulations, and currently accepted methods and practices of the specialty area. Supervisory approval is obtained on proposed work efforts, but the incumbent is allowed some latitude for exercise of independent judgment. Guidance is given on unusual or complex problems and procedures on a regular basis. Provides instructions on well-established procedures and tasks and monitors work activities of clerical personnel and/or student assistants. Coordinates the work of others in accomplishment of a specific task. Task scope and methods of accomplishment are determined by supervisor. Other Duties As Assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related and 3 years of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for Systems Administration, of which 2 years of the experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the next lower payband in the University of Hawai’i broadband system; or equivalent education/training or experience. Considerable working knowledge of Systems Administration as demonstrated by the broad knowledge and understanding of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving information technology concepts, principles and methodology. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with Systems Administration. Demonstrated ability to recognize a wide range of intricate problems, use reasoning and logic to determine accurate causes, and apply principles and practices to determine, evaluation, integrate, and implement practical and thorough solutions in an effective and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to provide instructions to others in a clear and effective manner. Familiarity with most basic system administration tools and processes (ie. add/remove user accounts, use backup utilities, manage shared resources, add a workstation to a network, mount remote file systems, and maintain system database files). Advanced knowledge and understanding of TCP/IP networking: routing, switching and firewalling. Experience troubleshooting networking issues. Ability to configure and troubleshoot Debian and/or RPM based Linux-based servers Experience analyzing infrastructure needs, researching solutions and presenting technically sound options to senior management. Extensive experience with the Unix/Linux command line. Familiarity with networked/distributed computing environment concepts; (ie. ability to use the route command, administer routing and remote access service, and modify deployed group policies). Knowledge and experience with LDAP. Knowledge and experience with Apache web services. Knowledge and experience with MySQL. Knowledge and experience with BIND DNS. Knowledge and experience with Postfix email server. Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (ie Perl, Python).Three or more years of experience in Linux systems administration. Experience using and troubleshooting Linux systems (esp. Ubuntu). Experience using and troubleshooting Windows 7 and Windows 10 desktops. Experience using and troubleshooting OSX systems. Experience with help desk operations. Experience maintaining and administering an Openstack infrastructure cloud.
