A Statewide Program
Post Baccalaureate OR M.Ed. in Special Education –
Mild/Moderate or Severe Disabilities/Autism Specialist
-Eligibility for Initial Teaching License-
Beginning: Summer 2009
Anticipated Completion: Spring/Summer 2011
The Post Baccalaureate in Special Education (PB-SPED), a 33 credit program, and the M.Ed. in Special Education, a 43 credit program (both include 1 credit of ETEC 501), concurrently will be offered State-Wide by the Department of Special Education to those with a Bachelor degree in any field and desiring (a) a teaching license and (b) a certificate or M.Ed. degree in special education.
Statewide Program Features
” Accommodates candidates who are employed but unlicensed special education teachers
” Classes taught online, via interactive web-based course delivery (Elluminate & Laulima/Sakai) or during non-working hours.
” Some student travel will be required on weekends (Approximately 1-3 times per semester, locations TBD)
” A stipend covering air travel and overnight accommodations (double occupancy) will be provided to students who must travel inter-island
Tuition Assistance
” The Special Education Department received a Federal grant for students interested in specializing in Autism. 15 grants of $20,000.00 are available
” Full tuition stipends are also available

Upon successful completion of this program and meeting the Hawai`i Department of Education PRAXIS requirements, students may apply for licensure in special education.
