NOTICE TO PERSONS APPEARING TO BE OWNERS OF ABANDONED PROPERTY

Pursuant to Chapter 523A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, and based upon reports filed with the Director of Finance, State of Hawaii, the names of persons appearing to be owners of abandoned property are available at the following internet site: http://www.unclaimedproperty.hawaii.gov/.
The term abandoned property refers to personal property such as money, bank accounts, certificates of deposit, negotiable instruments, gift certificates, credit balances, insurance refunds, etc. that in most cases, have remained inactive for a period of at least 5 years. Abandoned property as used in this context, has no reference to real estate.
A proof of claim must be presented by the owner to the holder prior to April 20, 2009. If the proof of claim is not presented by the owner to the holder and/or if the owner’s right to receive the property is not established to the holder’s satisfaction before the above prescribed date, the abandoned property will be placed in the custody of the Director of Finance, State of Hawaii, not later than May 1, 2009. All proof of claims must then be submitted to the Director of Finance, State of Hawaii.
Information concerning the description of the property may be obtained by persons possessing an interest in the property by addressing an inquiry to the Unclaimed Property Program, State of Hawaii, P.O. Box 150, Honolulu, HI 96810, or calling the Unclaimed Property Program in Honolulu at 586-1589. The toll-free voice access numbers for those with touch-tone phones for the Neighbor Islands are: Kauai 274-3141, Maui 984-2400, Hawaii 974-4000. After dialing the local number, voice prompts will inform you to dial the desired number, at that time you should dial “61589”. Residents of the islands of Molokai and Lanai may call 1-800-GOV-INHI (1-800-468-4644). Inquiries may also be emailed to unclaimedproperty@hawaii.gov.
Copies of the list are available for viewing at the Unclaimed Property Program, 250 South Hotel Street, Room 304, Honolulu, and at the following libraries – the Hawaii State Library-Hawaii and Pacific Section; Hilo, Hawaii Kai, Kahului, Kailua, Kailua-Kona, Kaimuki, Kaneohe, Lihue, McCully, Mililani, Pearl City, Salt Lake, and Waianae and the Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.
